Eye level view of someone sitting around a bonfire during the night Create memories without losing other memories and follow out bonfire safety guidelines!

There is truly nothing better than sitting near the water on a chilly fall Southern Maryland night, next to a warm bonfire, with family and friends gazing at the stars. Although it is a time to relax and debrief from the day, it is especially important to remember bonfire safety tips.

Follow these brief safety guidelines to help ensure the safety of those around before, during and after you set fire!!

Before:

  1. Only burn dry material, wet material will cause more smoke
  2. Build the bonfire away from structures such as trees, sheds, buildings and fences
  3. Using petrol or paraffin can cause the fire to get out of control
  4. If the winds are strong, pick another day to build the fire!

During:

  1. Keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher near by
  2. Do not leave the fire unattended
  3. Keep children and pets away from fire
  4. Do not burn aerosols, canisters, plastic or anything containing foam or paint - many produce toxic fumes and some containers may explode, causing injury

After:

  1. Wait till the fire has completely turned to ash
  2. Pour water until all pieces are wet
  3. If you hear a hissing sound or see red embers, the fire is still lit... pour more water!
  4. Dirt or sand are also good tools to use to cool the fire
  5. Never leave a fire that is still hot!
